  • Essay / African American Growing Pains After the Civil War - 849

The American Civil War simply known as the Civil War took place from 1861 to 1865 in the United States. This results from sectoral differences between the Northern and Southern territories. The main cause of the Civil War was slavery. The North and South failed to agree on the future of the slaves, and this dispute led to secession which later resulted in war between the territories. After years of deadly battles, the Southerners were defeated and slavery abolished, leading to the Reconstruction period. The Reconstruction Period, which is the period of rebuilding the United States after the Civil War, is considered a time of great pain and endless questions. in the United States (Gienapp, 2012). The Civil War led to the end of slavery and three constitutional amendments that changed the nature of African Americans' rights. The Thirteenth Amendment facilitated the abolition of slavery in all territories and states. Furthermore, the Fourteenth Amendment prohibits the United States from depriving male citizens of equal rights and protection of the law, regardless of race or color. Likewise, the Fifteenth Amendment granted all African American men the right to vote. All of these changes and their ratification were a vital condition for southerners to be readmitted to the Union. Although these changes were positive steps toward racial segregation, their implementation proved difficult because Southerners were against them, calling them revenge on Northerners. Southerners could not cling to the idea that black men could enjoy the same status as white men by being allowed to vote and hold office (Reconstruction: American's Unfinished Revolution, 2010). The reconstruction period lasted from 1865 to 1900, and w...... middle of paper...... had to face the pain of having to work with them in the same offices where they were allowed to exercise their functions, and also to vote for the leaders of their choice. African Americans struggled during the Industrial Revolution due to substandard housing, low wages, and lack of health care facilities. However, America's postwar pains affected everyone in the United States. Works Cited Gienapp, William E. Title Abraham Lincoln and Civil War America: A Biography.
