Essay / Shutter Island - 1723
At the beginning of Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, Teddy Daniels is intelligent, courageous, intelligent and determined. Teddy believes he is a United States Marshal sent to Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane on Shutter Island with his partner Chuck, to investigate the case of an escaped patient, Rachel Solando. Rachel is said to be a very dangerous patient who murdered her three children. She somehow escapes from her cell in the psych ward and is somewhere on the island. As soon as Teddy and Chuck step off the ferry and head to the desolate island, they are greeted with distance and distrust. None of the employees give them any real proof of the patient's disappearance and their responses seem to be scripted. Guards, wardens and doctors are always watching them. When they meet the head psychologist, Dr. Cawley, he seems friendly and speaks allusively, withholding most of the information he knows about Rachel Solando. Despite the monster hurricane that hits the island, Teddy remains determined and strong. Refusing to give up, Teddy sets out into the terrible storm, persisting in locating Rachel. When Teddy and Chuck go exploring the island, the intensity of the hurricane is described as follows: "Ashcliffe enveloped to their left somewhere in the roar of the wind and rain. The situation worsened considerably over the next half hour, and they squeezed their shoulders to hear each other speak and went down the list like drunkards” (139). The storm hits the island hard and yet Teddy continues to fight, no matter what. Another example of his courage is displayed when he climbs a huge cliff to reach a cave. In order to reach the cave he believes Chuck is camping in, Teddy climbs onto an extr...... middle of paper ...... y that was created alongside himself, he is truly malicious , Andrew Laeddis. Teddy uses Andrew to symbolize the side of himself that he cannot stand and has a deep hatred for. The guilt Andrew experienced was too much to bear alone. Thus, he created Teddy Daniels, a heroic United States Marshal, held on Shutter Island against his own will. When in reality, Andrew Laeddis is a crazy patient who lived in a hallucination to deal with his sins. Teddy is a dynamic character because he went from not knowing who he is to understanding who he really is. Andrew lies about admitting who he is in order to receive a lobotomy so he can forget all his pain forever. In conclusion, Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis faces many conflicts throughout the story that make him a dynamic character. After all, is it better to live as a monster or die as a good man? ??
