Tessie is a character who realizes that tradition is not always right or fair. After Tessie draws the black dot and is about to face death, she shouts to the people of the village: "'It's not fair, it's not right'" (265). Sometimes, like Tessie, people only realize the wrongfulness of tradition when it doesn't suit them and when it is ultimately too late to make a change. Other people may begin to question tradition before they are harmed. Mrs. Adams' character makes the statement while speaking to Old Man Warner: "Some places have already stopped lotteries" (263). Mrs. Adams is the character who seems to question tradition and is more likely to stray from tradition. Other characters such as Old Man Warner serve to show readers that some people can never deviate from tradition. After criticizing the northern village residents who talk about abandoning the lottery, Old Man Warner says, “There always was a lottery” (262). The way Old Man Warner emphasizes the word “always” gives readers a glimpse that this tradition will never go away in this village. Each of these characters played a very different role related to the theme of this story. The theme of "The Lottery" is that blindly following tradition can prevent people from realizing the wrongness of their actions, and that sometimes it is necessary to question tradition.
