Military PoliceThe Vietnam War gave rise to multiple uses for military police. These men had a wide range of tasks, from fighting on the front lines to controlling traffic. They also fought in numerous battles, attacked towns, guarded goods and important areas, trained dogs, dug up tunnel rats, and captured members of the Vietcong. Members of the military police were separated into 8 different brigades which all reported to the 18th Military Brigade. The 18th military brigade was divided into three categories, the 8th, the 16th and the 89th, which each had 3 branched subcategories. The 18th Military Brigade was established during the Vietnam War. He was deployed on September 7, 1966, to Vietnam. In January 1968, the Military Police Corps bravely faced multiple attacks launched by Vietnamese forces in several waves of coordinated attacks that later came to be called the Tet Offensive. These assaults influenced the soldiers who had the difficult task of defeating the enemy during the reign of attacks. During the Battle of Saigon, during the Tet Offensive, members of the 716th Battalion had to infiltrate and defeat Vietcong members who had attempted to raid and take control. This battle at the American Embassy proved to be one of the fiercest battles ever fought by the military police, in which four MPs were killed. During the Tet Offensive in the Republic of Vietnam, military police provided a first line of defense against enemy combat forces as well as much-needed firepower, communications, and transportation.
