  • Essay / Essay on Marxism in the Storm - 1398

Karl Marx once said: “Political economy considers the proletarian... like a horse, he must receive enough to enable him to work. She does not consider him, when he is not working, as a human being. That leaves it to criminal law, doctors, religion, statistical tables, politics and the beadle. Marxism is a theory that explores the political and economic ideologies that predominate in divided social classes. “Capitalism thrives by exploiting its worker” () Karl Marx created this theory because he firmly believed that the history of humanity is essentially the history of a struggle between social classes. This means that once the upper class becomes rich, they continue to stay rich because the workers who work for the rich receive less than what their work is actually worth. They think they are working very hard to achieve a concrete goal, when in reality they deserve much better. Marxism as a literary theory focuses on Marx's beliefs and how they are integrated into a literary text. The concepts of Marxism can be found in Shakespeare's well-known play, The Tempest. The play primarily focuses on a magician (Prospero) and his daughter Miranda, who have lived for twelve years on an isolated island alongside Caliban, Prospero's servant. Minor characters also appear in the text, to serve as foils to the main characters by accentuating their character traits, and also play a crucial role in the plot of the play. The Tempest focuses on the relationship between Caliban and Prospero, the supremacy that Prospero holds over Caliban, and explores why such relationships often exist. At the beginning of the play, the text strongly indicates that the relationship between Prospero and Caliban is far from romantic. ...... middle of paper ...... this is the reason why inequality is dynamic in Shakespeare's play and in society. This is the only reason why inequality is inevitable. Several aspects of Marxism can be seen during the play The Tempest. There is a social and economic divide between the characters, which creates tension between them throughout the play. Readers can see what it means to have power and how that power can be abused in order to mistreat others. In particular, Marxist ideologies can be applied specifically to the characters Prospero and Caliban. Prospero, a magician uses his power to treat Caliban inhumanely. No matter what Caliban does, he will always be placed at the bottom of the economic ladder. Shakespeare's powerful play offers readers a new way to watch and enjoy reading and analyzing this play, looking at it through the perspective of a Marxist theorist..
