  • Essay / Life and death in literature - 876

Death is part of life, it is only natural that authors and poets write about death. The word death evokes different feelings. Most are afraid of this idea. Some embrace death, the idea of meeting our maker. The feeling of not existing, while the rest of the world goes on with their lives, is overwhelming. To write about death, you have to write about life. Life and death usually constitute the plot of short stories, plays and poems. “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner; “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin; and John Keats's "When I'm Afraid to Cease to Be" all use life and death as their plot. The short story “A Rose for Emily” begins with the death of her father. The trauma of her father's death puts her in a phase of denial. She cannot accept his death. After accepting her death, she continued to live her life for the first time. The summer after her father's death, she fell in love with Homer Barron. This would be his living scene. She is living her life, for the first time. However, she becomes frightened by this love. So scared that she plots her death. So buy men's items such as clothes, a nightgown and a toilet seat with his initials. Then she buys rat poison. (Quoted in DiYanni, 2007, p. 79) The story only tells what happened to Homer Barron after Emily's death. Emily ceases to live before her actual death. She died killing Homer Barron. The only time Emily was happy was when she was with Homer. After she killed him, she stopped going out. She's just hiding in her house. Life and death are the plot of this story. The suspense was the death of her boyfriend, knowing that she had killed him. The public expected the story to be that she killed him; to see if she got caught... in the middle of a paper...... and alone..." (quoted in DiYanni, 2007, p. 1131) "When I'm afraid to stop 'being', the plot is life and death. The conflict makes Keats fear death. His fear of not succeeding in his writing career, before dying. Additionally, Keats is afraid of leaving his loved ones. .His life is the outcome. He turns to his family to make the fear disappear. He chooses to live rather than dwell on death. “Until love and fame fade into nothingness. » (quoted in DiYanni, 2007, p. 1131) The moment when life begins is the moment when death is closer. All humans are aware of death. Most literature is about life experiences. When death occurs, it affects the lives around it. This is why there are many short stories, plays and poems about death.
