  • Essay / Antigone Essay - 879

Antigone is a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles which has two tragic heroes, Antigone herself and Creon. A tragic hero is the main character in a tragedy who makes a mistake in his actions that leads to his downfall. Creon is the tragic hero of Antigone because he reveals all the characteristics of a tragic hero. Creon's tragic flaw is his pride. Creon's stubbornness, his abuse of power, and his actions that lead to his downfall in the play are three of the ways in which Creon can be the tragic hero. Creon is the tragic hero of Antigone for many reasons. His stubbornness in not wanting to be wrong because of his pride is one of the many reasons why Creon is the tragic character. Creon thinks it is okay to give Eteocles a proper burial, because he died, as every man should, fighting for his country. On the other hand, Creon treats Polyneices' death in an unpleasant and indifferent manner. Creon believed that Polynices should not receive a proper burial because Polyneices had broken his exile to return with fire and sword against his hometown and the shrines of his father's gods, the idea of which was to divide his blood and to sell his own people into slavery. Creon also declared that anyone who touched Polyneices or said the slightest prayer for him would be stoned to death. The Choragus tried to inform Creon that he had made a mistake in saying that no one could bury Polyneices, but to no avail. When Creon discovers that someone has buried Polyneices, he assumes that it is the men, the anarchists, who have buried him because they want money, but Antigone is actually the one who buries Polyneices. When the people of Thebes tried to tell Creon that Antigone had made the right choice, he would not listen to them. Creon believed that if he had an ex... middle of paper ...... and that even if he is rich, if he has no one to share it with, then he has nothing. This shows how Creon's actions are the most important quality that makes him a tragic hero. The fall of Thebes was the result of Creon's stubbornness, his abuse of power, and his actions that brought about his downfall. Creon believed that by being king of Thebes he could do whatever he wanted and make sure everything went his way and everyone only followed his laws. Creon's role as king also made him think that it was acceptable for him to break God's laws and establish his own laws that his people should follow without confronting his people first. Creon caused all the chaos in Thebes by trying to make its laws equal to God's laws. Teiresias foreshadows that this will have a bad ending and it does. In my opinion, the main drawback of Thebes lies in Creon's poor ability to differentiate good from evil..
