  • Essay / Consequences of alienation in District 9, in...

The film District 9 is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Blomkamp specifically used this location in order to highlight certain aspects of South African history, which also appear in the film. One of the main events was apartheid, which forced all non-whites to live in a specific area, allowing whites to have preference. This incident is very similar to what happens in District 9 where aliens land on Earth and are rejected by humans. However, the aliens cannot leave and are therefore forced into a confined area where they are watched over by humans, specifically Multi National. United. This gives the aliens an animalistic quality. PW Botha oppressed non-whites during apartheid and these visuals create a contrast between the film and the apartheid era where non-whites were mistreated and oppressed. The alien in the visual is angry because he is oppressed like non-whites were during the apartheid government regime. This is similar to when PW Botha had non-whites executed, sent to prison or quarantine, much like how aliens are treated in the film. In this way, non-whites and aliens are exactly the same and are mistreated in almost exactly the same way. Even though shrimps don't look very human, they still show human qualities such as verbal communication, walking on two legs, living in houses, and caring for their families. These shrimp are still treated unfairly by the government because humans feel superior. The visuals above put this theme into perspective perfectly, as a similar stance is taken by the human, as well as the non-white, in relation to the shrimp. The shrimp being on the ground or at least lower than the human shows that humans have more power and control over the non-human figure. The shrimp and the non-white human are in a position that symbolizes pain, fear, and lack of control as they lie on the ground and look at the human, showing that they are in the case of District 9, shrimp are seen as the others, where like in real world South Africa during apartheid or in xenophobic situations, non-whites or foreigners are seen as the others. This creates a false image of these people, as they are mistreated because they are different from others. These differences give the impression that humans are afraid of being invaded by these races or by foreign humans. It's obvious that humans are not used to these known aliens on earth and don't treat them like humans, which is understandable because they aren't, but they have no right to mistreat them like they do. make. The two visuals above show the so-called "extraterrestrial" with the so-called "superior race". The best word that defines this relationship is Diversity. The relationship between Christopher Johnson and Wikus van der Merwe is very similar to the relationship these two men have in the visual on the left. They are close to each other and a positive relationship is evident as they both work together to stand up for something they believe in. South Africa is a rainbow nation as a whole because it is very diverse. The alliance between Christopher and Wikus shows that there is no need to fight because humans and aliens can work together, without xenophobia or other means of hatred.
