Essay / The Marijuana Legalization Debate - 898
Recently, the California elections proposed a controversial new law allowing the state to implement a new tax on cannabis, Proposition 19. There are many reasons why to challenge this new proposition. First, we do not currently have a sufficient system to prevent the distribution of cannabis to minors. Second, drivers already have plenty of reasons to worry, such as drunk drivers and people using cell phones. So we should not add marijuana as an additional influence that people could freely access. Furthermore, once we have compromised by penalizing a recognized drug, what stops us from eventually legalizing much more serious drugs, such as cocaine and heroin? Say no to legalizing marijuana and protect the security of our country. We cannot control such wide distribution of marijuana. These days we have difficulty controlling the sale of alcohol to minors and therefore we cannot expect marijuana to be properly controlled either. Proof of this assertion, researchers Forster, McGovern, Wagenaar, Wolfson, Perry and Anstine (1994) tell us that “young buyers could purchase beer without identifying their age…. These results support the need to pay greater attention to availability. as a factor in adolescent alcohol consumption” (p. 699-705). Another example of the apparent tensions of watching the masses that we see is the difficult times in which movie theaters have to control people who have to follow the movie rating system. Introducing us to this problem, Giles (1994) writes, "Fourteen-year-old boys have their way of sneaking into R-rated movies," showing us this problem regarding the lack of ability of theaters to monitor minors who enter this which they are not. allowed to watch. As a result, we should not allow such a serious medication to be so easy...... middle of article ......ster, JL, McGovern, PG, Wagenaar, AC, Wolfson, M. , Perry, CL, Anstine, PS (1994).
