Did you read this tweet? Can you google this? And that photo on Facebook? Did you see this? Over time, we have found new ways to gather information and communicate with people through the Internet. We have Google, Twitter, Facebook and many other social networking sites. People say that our generation is overrun with many of these social sites. The essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid” discusses how we use the Internet so much that it could potentially make us stupid. Finding answers on Google is so easy that it prevents us from being able to sit down and read something to find out for ourselves. The second article “Small Change: Why The Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” takes a deeper look at the effects of gatherings via the Internet by comparing the era of the revolution to the current era. Rhetorically, the two essays have similarities and differences. By looking at the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, you can see how it affects the audience and what the purpose of these articles is. In "Is Google Making Us Stupid", Carr uses ethos to talk about how we use Google now and it has affected our ability to read long articles and hold our attention, even though his article is one of the longest. Bruce Freedman states: "I have now almost completely lost the ability to read and digest a fairly long article on the web or in print" (quoted by Carr). Carr and others can relate to this because in his article he talks about how we are now “skimming” the things we read. He uses quotes from other people who share the same views as him using ethos to ensure credibility, which can also be ensured since Carr has published a book and written many others. In "Small Change:" the author also uses the appeal to ethos by using facts from the past to show that he knows...... middle of paper ...... people to convey the message to the reader. It even uses a scientific study carried out at University College London. While Gladwell tells stories of other people and stories from the past to show his message about how we use a different form of connection than people in the 60s. Gladwell uses many references to the Civil War in his writing . The two writings are also similar because they both write with the aim of informing their reader about the information they found on the Internet and its effects on the people who use it. The way the author presents the information and his method of writing are different. Pathos influences the audience emotionally just as ethos influences the audience ethically. By looking at these two writings you can see how ethos and pathos, you can see how it affects the audience and helps you find the purpose of the article..
