Essay / Essay on Gender Roles in Media - 1042
Remarkable viewers should be aware of the messages existing in the media, such as gender roles and stereotypes that are presented in advertisements, on television, in films and music. For example, Tide, a Proctor and Gamble laundry detergent, shares an ad of a stay-at-home dad who takes care of his daughter, who loves her princess dress and wears it most of the week. In this ad, not only is the father depicted in a masculine light by being placed in "jail" while his daughter plays the role of sheriff, but the father is also shown playing princess-themed games with his daughter. Sharing images of a man playing "girly" games with his daughter indicates a more egalitarian society, meaning gender roles and stereotypes are obscured. Tide's ad alludes to the idea that gender roles are almost obsolete in today's culture, while the world is on the path to adopting gender equality to be recognized in all aspects of life.
