    The Maxima Supermarket Disaster is a tragedy that occurred in Riga, Latvia on November 21, 2014. The Republic of Latvia is a country in Europe in the North and is surrounded by modern Estonia. , Lithuania, Russia, Belarus and a small part of Sweden. The supermarket opened in 2011 as a retail store selling many different types of merchandise. The store was connected to a new apartment complex built across the street from the supermarket and also built by the same construction company. The building was developed by Homburg Valda. The architectural design was carried out by Zane Kalinka and Andris Kalinka of local architectural firm KUBS. The cause of this disaster was due to the collapse of the roof of the supermarket. The building measured five hundred square meters; once the roof collapsed, the entire structure was destroyed. Many people were shopping in the market at the time of the collapse. Once the roof collapsed, emergency vehicles arrived on scene within minutes. There were up to thirteen fire trucks at the supermarket to help rescue the victims. However, a second collapse occurred after the rescue mission began, resulting in the deaths of three Latvian firefighters. Despite emergency efforts by Latvian police and firefighters, fifty-four people were killed in this disaster and forty-one were injured. A green garden was being constructed on the roof of the collapsed building. Much controversy and speculation has arisen from the disaster. “This collapse was the greatest loss of life since Latvia became independent from the USSR in 1991.” There are many possible causes as to how and why the roof collapsed.
