  • Essay / Issues Related to Rohingya Ethnicity in Myanmar

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDYNowadays, there are too many conflicts or problems related to ethnic issues in some countries around the world. Many years ago, the world was grappling with racial issues arising in Africa, namely the issues of “apartheid”. Fortunately, this issue was resolved peacefully. However, these racial conflicts still took place years later all over the world and some of them still cannot be resolved. One of the problems concerns the Rohingya ethnic group in Myanmar. Before discussing the reasons or causes that have led to this ethnic problem and how human security addresses this problem, let us first introduce who Rohingya is. According to (Chan, 2005), “the people who call themselves Rohingya are the Muslims of the Mayu border region, the present-day Buthidaung and Maungdaw townships of Rakhine State, an isolated province in the western part of the country on the other side of the Naaf River. as a border with Bangladesh. They were in fact the direct descendants of immigrants from the Chittagong district of East Bengal (now Bangladesh), who had migrated to Arakan after the province was ceded to British India under the terms of the Treaty of Yandabo, an event which concluded the First World War. Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826)”. The Rohingya are a Muslim minority population living mainly in Rakhine State, Burma and who are not accepted by their own country of Myanmar. Indeed, according to the government of Myanmar, the Royingya ethnic group is not part of its citizens but belongs to Bangladesh. Unfortunately, the Bangladesh government does not recognize them either. So, from this rejection, the Rohingya problem has persisted until this moment, with no solution yet.
