  • Essay / A comparison between "In-N-Out Burger" and "Fast Food Nation"

Often people buy a book from a bookstore after reading the first few pages to make sure the book is interesting enough to continue to read it at home. . That’s why Amazon offers a “Click to LOOK INSIDE!” » button on each book. It is the most important part of an entire book in order to attract potential readers. One might expect that In-N-Out Burger and Fast Food Nation would both have strong early hooks since they were both New York Times bestsellers. Although they both focus on the fast food industry, the way they are written is quite contrasting. In the prologue to In-N-Out Burger, author Stacy Perman writes not about hamburgers or the company, but primarily about the phenomena caused by hamburgers. On the other hand, in the introduction to Fast Food Nation, author Eric Schlosser divides it into two different parts, a story about Cheyenne Mountain Base and a quick overview of the fast food industry. Throughout In-N-Out Burger's prologue, Perman manages to grab readers' attention by describing the facts in detail, making them want to turn the pages for further reading. On the contrary, despite Schlosser's concise and precise account, Fast Food Nation's introduction does not seem to make readers want to read more due to its unsuccessful analogy and the composition of the chapter. In-N-Out Burger's introduction definitely grabs more readers' attention than Fast Food Nation's due to the rhetoric and composition. First of all, the way In-N-Out Burger and Fast Food Nation present the facts is quite different. In In-N-Out Burger, Perman presents many episodes in detail. Midway through the chapter, she cites what many celebrities have actually said about hamburgers, which...... middle of paper ......nse Perman's prologue is interesting enough to keep going read the following story from the book. .Perman successfully begins the story with plenty of details and hooks, while Schlosser fails to motivate readers to move on to the next chapter due to inadequate analogy and quick summaries of the entire book. For writing, especially for non-fiction, an introduction always plays a very important role in grabbing the attention of the readers. It's a good strategy to leave them a little unsatisfied so they'll look for more and turn the next page. These two introductions are perfect examples of what is effective and ineffective.
