The Great Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Although it has been affected by the surrounding population as well as hydroelectricity problems, many projects have been carried out to save this rich natural resource. The lake is the heartland of Cambodians, providing more than half of the national fish production in inland waters with over a million inhabitants. who directly depend on it for their livelihood. It is located in the northwestern part of Cambodia, approximately 15 kilometers south of the city of Siem Reap. Since 1997, it has been classified by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve and world heritage site. The Great Tonlé Sap Lake has been considerably polluted by the activities of the surrounding populations. First, daily household waste, even toilets from floating houses, are thrown into the lake. These bad habits caused the water in the lake to change from clear to dirty and affected the ecological system there. As a result, fish production increased from 444,500 tonnes in 2001 to 389,800 tonnes in 2003 (Srun Lim Song, Lieng Sopha, Ing Try & Heng Sotharith).
