We still dance at major celebrations, but it's no longer the only time people dance. On stage, people pay to see the art form of music come to life. Ballet played a role in allowing women to perform on stage, giving them leading roles in dances, and developing a dance style unique to their physiques: the use of pointe shoes. Through ballet, women's skirts came up to their ankles so that sophisticated footwork and grace were not hidden under thick skirts. Although scandalous when the first ballerina lifted these skirts, the tutu, the shortest skirt in all cultures and fashions, is the normal uniform of the modern ballerina. Thick-heeled shoes gave way to pointe shoes, designed to lift a dancer on tiptoe; and although they are designed to give the illusion of lightness and floating on stage, using these shoes requires a skill and endurance that very few people can sustain.
