Essay / Embryonic stem cell research: a new medical paradigm...
Modern medicine has had a remarkable impact on the health of people around the world. The treatments discovered by scientists are undoubtedly astonishing. Despite all these astonishing discoveries, many of these innovations are, in fact, treatments and not cures (O'Brien para 5). Now why is this a problem? Imagine waking up every day and enduring grueling treatments for blindness, hearing loss, cancer, Parkinson's disease, or any other known incurable disease; Modern medicine begins to limit itself to the temporary treatment of illnesses, rather than eliminating them completely (O'Brien para 4; Durant 192). There is reason to hope that stem cell research will be the future of medicine (Durant 1). Embryonic stem cell research is probably one of the most debated issues globally today (Thomas 4). Scientists and anti-stem cell research groups agree that there is room for debate, because on the one hand this type of research interrupts the life of an embryo, but also contributes to the development of a remedy that could in turn help save many lives (Thomas 15; O'Brien, paragraph 6). Due to their promising results, research on embryonic stem cells should be widely accepted and the law should allow researchers to study them in more depth in order to implement their use in medicine today. Stem cells can be used to treat and heal human tissue that has been damaged or diseased (Thomas 17). Doctors around the world are already successfully using adult stem cells to treat diseases. The use of adult stem cells is not often considered controversial because adult stem cells are voluntarily derived from bone marrow and other tissues from adult donors (Thomas 18).
