Essay / Treatment of Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction
This article will critique a quantitative research study (Lesnecki, 2010) that examined the influences of individuals who delayed seeking treatment during an acute myocardial infarction. myocardium (IAM). The article examines psychosocial and environmental influences that may have played a role in the time from onset of AMI symptoms to obtaining medical treatment. The research study will be reviewed by examining the background, study objective, design and methodology, data analysis, findings, discussion, limitations, and applications for nursing practice.BackgroundLesnecki ( 2010) gave a brief review of the literature and described the magnitude of the treatment problem. delay in patients with AMI. She discussed the prevalence of treatment delays in the United States: “310,000 people die each year from coronary heart disease in an emergency department or before reaching a hospital” (p. 185). Other research was highlighted that linked the variables of age, gender, and race to a delay in seeking treatment for AMI. The author discussed the importance of this type of research and emphasized that “to preserve the heart muscle, time is crucial” (p. 185). The author hoped to uncover additional variables that could help nurses educate the public to seek prompt medical treatment when experiencing AMI symptoms. Purpose The researcher (Lesnecki, 2010) clearly stated the purpose of the study to “identify the cognitive, social, and emotional influences of individuals. delay treatment if you have AMI symptoms” (p. 186). The variables proposed to be related to delay in seeking treatment were closely examined and the degree of influence that the variables had in relation to this decision, made by the patient, was taken into account.MethodDesign.. .... middle of article ..... .dpractice (4th ed.).
