Due to racial discrimination that limited their opportunities, black Americans developed various skills to connect their creative work to their political activities and culture through many intellectual pursuits, including arts, music and religion. . McCoy was born on May 2, 1844 in Colchester, Ontario, Canada, to George and Mildred Goins McCoy. He was raised by runaway slave parents along with his eleven siblings. McCoy's interest in mechanics began at a young age. An article titled Elijah McCoy found in “The Biography Channel” points out: “From an early age, Elijah McCoy showed a strong interest in mechanics. His parents organized a trip to Scotland for him at the age of 15 for an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering.” Having been raised in conditions of slavery and having an interest in mechanics confirms McCoy's natural intelligence.
