  • Essay / The Effects of the Darfur Conflict on Neighboring Countries...

The purpose of this essay is to adequately describe the current conflict in Darfur and discuss the effects that the Darfur Conflict has had on neighboring countries , the Horn of Africa. region and the interest of the United States. Additionally, this essay will explore how the Darfur conflict affects global concerns. Background: Darfur is an Islamic sultanate located in the western region of Sudan; which is often called the Horn of Africa. It is estimated that it covers a fifth of the country and has between four and six million inhabitants. The geographical composition of Darfur is made up of traditional Muslim Arabs located in the northern part of Darfur, with the southern part consisting of "White Arabs" and Furs (Darfurian people or peasants). Darfur is bordered by Libya to the north, by Chad to the west and by the Central African Republic to the southwest of Kordofar. The Bahr El-Gazal region borders the eastern and southern parts of Darfur. Essentially, the Fur are the main ethnic group, hence the name Darfur. (DAR equals Abode, DAFUR meaning the abode of Fur. The rest of the population are nomadic or semi-nomadic herders. Most farmers live near a subsistence level. Which means they have the minimum requirements to meet their physical needs such as food, shelter, clothing and medical care in case of emergency "The Fur, largely peasants, occupy the central belt of the region, including the Jebel massif. Marra. There are also the non-Arabs Masalit, Berti, Bargu, Bergid.", the Tama and the Tunjur who are sedentary agriculturists who generally stay in the same place. In the northernmost area are Dar Zaghawa, part of the Libyan Sahara, and some "camel nomads" mainly Bedeyat and Zaghawa who are not of Arab origin, and the ...... middle of document ......nge the Horn of Africa. and the United States to work toward fulfilling a promise by seeking ways to stop and prevent violence against groups based on religion, race, ethnicity. Ultimately, the United States will continue to play a role in the Darfur conflict, President Obama is currently advocating a "softer approach" and the United States is expected to unveil a policy to resolve the conflict in Sudan. Many critics say this won't solve anything and, frankly, only time will tell. My only worrying question is: what role will Libya and Egypt have in the Darfur conflict? This should be very interesting given Libya's recent moves.
