    The symbol “heart” in the gothic story “The Revealing Heart” by EA Poe becomes a metaphor for time. The story “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Poe contains several interesting symbols. They were important attributes of Gothic history during the era of Romanticism in 19th century literature and usually became metaphors. One of the central symbols in this story seems to be the “heart.” From the beginning of the story, we can notice that the word "heart" is used in both senses: in its direct meaning - a muscular organ that pumps blood to allow breathing - old man's heart and indirect: "even if I laughed in the heart”, “in a warm tone” (Poe, p.1590), “to open it with a light heart”. (p.1592) The author places the metaphors in contrast to the situation, while addressing the “heart” of either the victim or the murderer. We can state that the "heart" is associated only with life, based on a more conventional view, as in previous literary eras. However, in Gothic stories it could take on a different connotation and, in this particular case, it would turn into a metaphor for reality....
