    The third most common disorder among adolescents is eating disorders (Reijonen, 2003). There are three types of eating disorders. The prevalence rate of eating disorders has increased over the past 50 years. These are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. These disorders begin in adolescence and can cause psychological and medical problems. All three have a similar etiology, such as biological and sociocultural factors that develop the eating disorder. Although the three types of eating disorders may overlap with similar characteristics, for each type of disorder there is a specific treatment that works best for one and not the other. Prevalence rates are difficult to calculate among adolescents because adolescents do not admit that they have certain symptoms of eating disorders. Another problem is that adolescents may not fully meet diagnostic criteria, leading to underestimated prevalence rates.
