  • Essay / Along Together By Sherry Turrkle Analysis - 941

I found Sherry Turkles “Along Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other” very intriguing. His book really makes you question the lifestyle we live and opens your eyes to the direction we are heading today. In his book, Turkle explains how we have chosen to be alone now that technology has been integrated into our daily routine and invades every aspect of our lives. She suggests that with all the modern technology around us, we have had less time to face the real world. We use this technology to stay connected 24/7 and we love it, but is it really such a good thing to be so connected to these inanimate objects? Many of us can sit through an entire conference, or even an entire day, without at least once checking our phone. Turkle suggests that those of us who are constantly connected but stop short of having an in-person conversation aren't making the emotional connections we'd prefer to make. This leads to his theory that we can be in constant communication and still feel completely alone. Although at first I didn't think many of his arguments applied to me, as I read more I began to realize more and more how far technology has evolved. took over my life. As a student whose family resides on the other side of the planet, I know first-hand what it's like to constantly use technology to stay in touch with family and friends abroad. My phone is never more than an arm's length away from me. I am constantly connected to the outside world in one way or another. Even when I'm in bed at night and alone, my phone is right next to me and connected to a 2 meter wire, because regular wire won't reach my bed. I am never truly alone, never completely isolated. However, in doing this we are constantly in the middle of paper...... new anxieties of disconnection appear. “We cannot resist the impact of technology. It completely encompasses our lives. We can, however, limit the extent to which technology affects our daily routine. By giving ourselves time, I mean entirely to ourselves and not to our smartphones, we are giving ourselves time with our minds. You don't need to know what's going on in the world at all times. “We make our technologies and they, in turn, shape us. » Too much is never a good thing, no matter what it may be. In today's society, we rely too much on technology, to the point that our social norms and principles have started to change. This doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, but when every aspect of our lives depends on technology, a problem begins to arise. We no longer have privacy when we are alone together, blurring the boundaries of intimacy.
