  • Essay / Gaining Experience in Healthcare - 1083

Since I started college in 2004, I have focused on taking as many science courses as possible. I wanted to stay in the medical field, I never imagined I could work in the business field. I thought the medical field would open the door to many secure jobs in pharmacy and dentistry. In 2007, my mother had a serious stroke. After leaving school for two years to care for my mother, my focus changed. Coming back to school, I wanted a degree that would allow me to find a job right out of school and while waiting to enter pharmacy school. My pharmacy school choices were limited to public schools only. I was fortunate to be introduced to healthcare management by a friend. Healthcare management seemed appealing to me because I always wanted to work in healthcare. I wasn't sure if I was born to be a manager. I had experience in project management working for a private law firm for two years, but not in personnel management. A few years ago, I took the “How to Deal with Difficult People” class at Community College of Aurora because I doubted my communication skills. I never thought I would be a good communicator. In college, writing in Vietnamese was one of my strengths, I even wanted to become a journalist when I grew up, but writing in English is one of my weaknesses. The first semester starting healthcare management courses; I took four healthcare management courses at a time. It was my best semester because I was able to take a break from my science classes. There were challenges because I was not confident in writing and presenting in front of the class. But I learned a lot from these courses. My favorite topic in most of my articles was the pharmaceutical industry, but I also learned about long term care and palliative care......middle of article......ved. While helping draft policy projects, I learned the guidelines for accurate diagnosis and billing based on ICD-9, soon to be ICD-10 and CPT codes, respectively. I feel more confident as a future office manager knowing this guideline. Even though nearly 300 employees have been laid off in the last two months due to a new Affordable Care Act regulation change, Ms. Seidelberg wants me to return for the 2014 HEDIS season. I didn't expect to get a job through this internship, but it is a good opportunity for me to gain more professional experience in the healthcare field. As I approach graduation, I am ready to use the knowledge I learned in school and the skills I learned during my internship to continue working and gain more experience. I am motivated to come back to Denver Health! This time I will be proactive in finding ways to work smarter and more efficiently..
