Essay / Snapshots of a Daughter-in-law - 969
Adrienne Rich sets the storyIn “Snapshots of a Daughter-in-law” by Adrienne Rich, the poet is able to address all the different stages of a daughter's life. a woman, thus adopting a historical temperament. . The story temperament can be defined as a poem having three parts including a beginning, middle and end. The poem should also show unity, focus, conflict, and resolution. Every woman may face different conflicts in her life, but in the poem, women face sadness and depression while living in a patriarchal society. The title itself is very strong in that these are not snapshots of a woman, but snapshots of a daughter-in-law. This title prefigures a masculine figure in which the woman will be married and on whom she will depend. The word snapshots can also foreshadow the different stages of a woman's life that certain photos (or stanzas) will capture. With a strong background, Rich is an advocate for women's rights and equality with men in all aspects, whether politically, socially or economically. Coming from a traditional and intellectual family, the poet married a Harvard economist and had three young children. Going through the same issues she discusses and wants to change allows the poem to become a poetry of testimony. If a woman remains independent and single throughout her life, it is believed that there is something wrong with her. From the moment they are born, women are sucked into society's norms, that they must grow up under the guidance and protection of their fathers, and then become good wives for their husbands once they get married. This means dependence on a man for almost a woman's entire life. The poem begins by describing a very young and naive woman. "You, once beautiful in Shreveport, with henna-colored hair, sk...... in the middle of a paper... a single photo or "snapshot" that I believe Adrienne Rich did well. Full of conflict, dramatic tension and a two-sided storyline, Rich's poem perfectly meets the requirements of the story's temperament. Overall, "Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law" is the incarnate truth of. submissive wives living in a patriarchal society seeking resolution or a sense of independence Works Cited "20th Century American Poets Adrienne Rich Poets (1929-2012)".
