Essay / Exploring the idea of discourse community and connecting...
For my ethnography project III, I am researching and observing the Jackson High School drama department's production of Annie: The Musical . The importance of this community is that it leads the students involved to adopt the best behavior in order to participate. They must stay out of trouble and be able to maintain a cumulative GPA required to be in the group. This group is also important because it is a means of expression that allows students to be who they want to be. The drama department is made up of students from kindergarten through twelfth grade who attend Jackson City Schools. Each student in the cast and crew each has an important job to do for the play to be successful. However, to be successful, members of this group must communicate with each other in different ways. Some forms of communication are verbal while others are not, but both means are crucial to ensuring production success. Additionally, communication doesn't just happen on stage, it also happens behind the scenes and after practice. Another way the group communicates with each other is by using terms that the average person would not understand. Throughout this article, I will also explore the idea of discourse community and relate it to drama club. For something to be a speech community, it must meet many requirements, including a broad set of common goals, communication among members, a means of providing feedback, has at least one genre, has a specific lexicon and has a threshold of members possessing an appropriate degree of relevant content and discursive expertise (Swales). After observing this group of people, I came to the decision that they do in fact represent a speech community. The broad set of group goals would be...... middle of document ...... interviewing the members of this group and I was able to discuss and analyze the way they communicate within the group. I learned the meanings as well as some customs and terms that are generally only known to this type of speech community. Overall, this Discourse community was an interesting community to observe and analyze. Works Cited Balzer, Emily. Personal interview.
