  • Essay / The strategic direction of the New Zealand Defense Force

    The New Zealand national security system has traditionally relied on a network of experienced practitioners who have, over time, developed good habits of cooperation and collaboration. New Zealand's strategic direction now retains the best of a long-standing system while setting out a path forward to strengthen that system and position it to meet a more demanding range of demands and expectations. New Zealanders expect a system that can understand, mitigate and respond effectively to the full range of contemporary security issues. Budgetary pressures mean that greater attention is being paid to value for money and, as more central and local government entities become involved in national security issues, it becomes imperative to set strategic priorities, to coordinate resources, exercise unambiguous leadership and provide clearer accountability. The Defense White Paper (DWP) sets out our Government's plan to build a stronger Defense Force (NZDF); A force tailored to keep New Zealand secure at a time when significant strategic change in the Asia-Pacific region means we must prepare for uncertainty. The Chief of Defense Force's (CDF) plan to strengthen the defense forces is called Future 35, our strategy to 2035, because this vision will require years of investment and constant construction to create the capabilities necessary to maintain national security in the future. “Future 35” or “F35” describes the force required to credibly meet future challenges and includes the capabilities and infrastructure needed to support it. The DWP is the Government's strategic management product for creating and sustaining a successful defense force into the future.
