Changes in Sony's Management to Regain Competitive AdvantageSony Corporation is a unique company that has made a name for itself in the electronics industry. Since they are based in Japan, they follow "Japan's business culture, juxtaposing traditional strategies with modern concepts" (Das 3). Being an innovative company with a strong Japanese culture and constantly producing new, never-before-seen products has given this company a sustainable competitive advantage. Sony's mission is to be a company that inspires and fulfills your curiosity. The main philosophy they live by is “all we do is to move you emotionally”. They strive to improve the overall quality of life through new products and volunteer work. When people think of the Sony brand, they see a successful company at the forefront of innovation. Over the past few years, Sony has suffered significant losses in the PC and TV industries and is now trying to heal its wounds and regain a competitive edge. To begin investigating whether the company can maintain a competitive advantage, it must begin with the analysis of the external environment and how it affects an industry. Conducting a macro-environmental analysis of an industry involves six different segments and how they affect Sony and its industry. The demographic segment is based on physical characteristics and is the simplest segment to analyze. Sony may benefit or suffer due to the demographic segment. Their main business is aimed at young adults who have a good understanding of technology. This is a good market to target, but it is currently not the largest age group in the United States.
