Essay / If seal hunting is illegal - 1389
Lawrence in eastern Quebec, this is usually where the females give birth. A few hundred, if not a few thousand, Canadian fishermen go to the coast and bludgeon, slaughter and skin the pups for their fur. Most pups are killed between three weeks and three months, which represents approximately 95% of commercial seals. (harpseals.org) Hunting really isn't much of a hunt these days. Hunters travel to the seals, whether by snowmobile, truck or small boats capable of breaking the ice. When on the icebreaking boats, they can either go out and walk towards the pups, or simply shoot at the seals from inside the boat (harpseal.org). The very process of killing seals is appalling. Finding the sigils is only the very first step. Then they hit them with what they call “hakapiks” (long sticks with spikes/hooks on the ends). Today, most seal pups are stranded, most ice caps are melting so quickly that the pups don't have time to learn to swim, because the ground beneath them disappears, they get stuck where it is easy for seal poachers to kill seal pups. puppies
