Essay / Melancholia Movie - 1295
MelancholiaMelancholia is a feeling of sadness and depression and what better way to capture that than with the end of the world. Von Trier did a wonderful job depicting the end of the world. In this movie, the way the world would eventually end would be the planet Melancholia eventually colliding with Earth. John, Claire's husband, always reassures her that Melancholia will never return to earth. Most of the time you start watching movies to distract yourself from worldly things, but it takes you so far into the real world that the viewer starts to feel depressed. The feeling of depression is so great in this film that it brings a great feeling of discomfort. If I were a director, I would strive to make the audience uncomfortable. The movie is somewhat confusing but in the end it made sense to me, but not completely. This film, for starters, has beautiful cinematography. I really like the opening scene of the film where the scenes are arranged and in super slow motion. The cinematography of these opening scenes is what kept me watching the film for this long. Sometimes I didn't understand the reason during the movie, but most of the scenes that appeared at the beginning of the movie appeared sporadically throughout the movie. The soundtrack at the beginning of the film really depressed you during the first slow motion scenes. Throughout the film, whenever there was a punchline or a moment of worry, this song would come back and play. Eventually this song lost its power because it was used so frequently. The sound was great in my opinion, not only from a soundtrack perspective, but also from the usual everyday sounds. It felt like you were in the middle of a paper... the ideas that this movie has. This was a great film for the artistic film buff, not the ordinary audience who would go see a film in the cinema. The style of this film is based solely on a single character and runs entirely through the film. The way this film came to me may not be the same to someone else. For me, it was a love and hate film. I really enjoyed many parts, but thought a lot of it was too long. It's definitely experimental also in the fact that something like this could never happen, because if a planet ever came close to Earth, something would most likely have happened to us before it literally crashed into us . I appreciate this perception because it gives us an idea of what could be, and it also opens our eyes to what people actually experience and suffer on a daily basis...
