Poverty, a state of extreme poverty, is a recurring theme throughout the film Beasts of the Southern Wild; furthermore, giving the audience insight into the ongoing problem that residents of the isolated Delta community of The Bathtub face quite often. The film depicts poverty as a way of life, and those living in The Bathtub have adapted to the circumstances of the community without being able to improve their living conditions. When the citizens of The Bathtub have limited resources, living in poverty is not a choice; therefore, it is an adaptation to survive and those living in the bath have limited resources to benefit from opportunities for a better life, education and health care. La Baignoire, a country in the SouthPoverty in La Baignoire was not perceptible because it was a way of life. In the film, every scene featured noticeably impoverished living conditions, from the Wink and Hushpuppies houses to the bar and school; however, when that's all you know; This doesn’t feel like poverty, but rather a great life. Hushpuppy's world began with obstacles stacked against her, including a nonexistent mother figure, an alcoholic father, and limited opportunities for growth and development. Hushpuppy longs for her mother's love in the film, and when she is home alone, Hushpuppy expresses her feelings for her mother. Wink, Hushpuppy's father, struggles with his health and education and drowns his problems in alcohol; therefore, pushing Wink's priorities away from her child and towards her addiction and causing more problems for Hushpuppy. Hushpuppy's difficulties during early childhood can negatively impact his decision-making into adulthood, and during his transitions from childhood to adolescence and from adolescence to adulthood, the Bathtub community will play a major role in its development due to its close-knit community (Snell325). Wink faced an unknown medical problem in the film, and his problems were usually treated with alcohol or Mrs. Bathsheba's remedies; therefore, leading the public to question whether he had received adequate medical care he would be in his condition. As the film continues and the government imposes a mandatory evacuation of The Bathtub, Wink is faced with a huge dilemma as Hushpuppy witnesses her father lashing out at the doctors while they are quarantined at this government facility. Hushpuppy soon sees his father sink into a state he never wanted to be in; hence, pulling the independent girl into a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions and prompting the entire group of citizens of The Bathtub to take a chance on returning home. Wink didn't want to be plugged into the wall in his final days, so the others from The Bathtub took him home to his final resting place; however, the adverse reaction to the health care provided to Wink suggests to the public that he was not receptive to help or that it was too late to recover. According to James Kirby's study, community characteristics influence access to health care, and among citizens of The Bathtub, their access to health care was limited due to their lifestyle choices.
