  • Essay / Hawthorne's Writing: Nathaniel's Writing Style...

A writer's style is a combination of thousands of factors that influence a writer to create a unique meaning for each word he or she uses ; furthermore, they invent the relationships and patterns found between these words. Each author has a unique writing style. Nathaniel Hawthorne's was about what he was passionate about. Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style reflects his Puritan beliefs, as indicated by his personal life and family background; his style also indicates that his relationship with his wife was far from ideal; furthermore, these ideas are evident in "The Birthmark", "The Ministry's Black Veil", and "Young Goodman Brown". Nathaniel Hawthorne's ancestral connection to the Salem witch trials influenced his writing style. Her ancestor was one of the judges who sentenced innocent women to death. This idea, that his ancestors sentenced innocent women to death, had deep meaning for Hawthorne and moved him from Hathorne to Hawthorne so that he could distance himself from this event in history. The whole controversy over the witch trials affected Hawthorne deeply and is evident in his short stories. For example, in “The Minister's Black Veil,” “But the strangest thing about this affair is the effect of this whim, even on a sober man like me. The black veil, although it covers only the face of our pastor, casts its influence over his whole person and makes him ghostly from head to toe. Don't you feel that way? (“The Minister’s Black Veil”). The black veil represented Hawthorne's own skeleton in the closet; his connection to the witch trials that caused him so much trouble. Like the Black Veil, the witch trials were only a small part of his ancestors' lives, but they cast an influence over the medium and drove an irreparable divide between them that Hawthorne always regretted. God was also an important part of his life, so much so that the main ideas of his religion were reflected in his writings. He wrote about ministers, good men, and a man who tried to play God; moreover, not only did he write about these men, but he showed their flaws and how no one is perfect. He touched on what God already knew because God himself is perfect in the way he forgives everyone and allows them to redeem themselves even after they sin. No matter what someone believes in when it comes to religion, that religion is very important to them, and even if they don't have a religion, the fact that they don't have a religion is very important to them . Everything they do is more or less in the name of what they believe in. Their relationships with their family come before everything else in their lives..
