Essay / A quartet of sensational similarities from...
William Shakespeare, a playwright in the 1600s, changed the way English literature is viewed to this day. It influenced the way a character's emotions are captured on a page and shaped the English language. Drama, tragedy, romance and comedy are presented in a new light as he manipulates words to become his own stories. Shakespeare wrote many classic plays that have been attributed to him, such as Romeo and Juliet. Each work has a new plot and storyline, but Shakespeare seems to use common techniques and styles in many plays. Many authors use this same method, which develops the fluidity and motifs of their stories. This allows the author to become known for a style through his work. For Shakespeare, his works share similarities such as power struggles, love and romance, immediate conflicts, and linked sub-stories. Power struggles are a common theme in many older classical works and Shakespeare also fits into this pattern. In the play The Taming of the Shrew, the struggle takes place between Katherine and Petruchio, and how they both want to gain the upper hand in situations. They often seem to clash, especially when having conversations in the public eye: “Petruchio: I say it's the moon. Katherine: I know it's the moon. Petruchio: No, then you're lying. It is the blessed sun. (TTOTS IV.V.18-20) The conversation these characters participate in demonstrates how Katherine is the weakest because despite her discernible knowledge of light being the sun, she breaks and conforms to its ways. This also shows how presumptuous Petruchio is because he intentionally formulated a way for his wife to make a fool of herself. Another example of this is in A Midsummer Night's Dream ... middle of paper ... a way that allows the story to flow and is easy to read. For Shakespeare, a tragedy is simply not just a tragedy. tragedy, it is a story that blossoms and transforms into a profound novel. The way he wrote these tragedies seems to be similar from one play to the next. These similarities and characteristics are what sets Shakespeare apart from other authors. This allows him to have an overall theme which links his works together and defines his technique. Earnest Hemingway is another author who is characterized by his writing style. Hemingway is known to have a deeper meaning under the top layer of the story, like in The Old Man and the Sea, the deeper meaning is that friendship is the most important thing in life. Whether Shakespeare wrote a tragedy, comedy, sonnet, or any other genre, he seemed to incorporate many of these different characteristics into his work..
