    Dimmesdale calls Hester and Pearl to go up to the scaffold with him and they do so, symbolic because it is the same scaffold where he shamed Hester he seven years ago and now he's standing next to her. Chillingworth saw this and asked Dimmesdale to move away from Hester and Pearl and further saying, "Do not blacken your fame or perish in dishonor!" I can still save you! Would you like to bring infamy to your sacred profession? (Hawthorne 248). In reality, this shows that Chillingworth is only trying to extend his time of revenge against Dimmesdale, because Chillingworth thought that Dimmesdale was going to confess that he had sinned with Hester and that this would completely destroy Chillingworth's ability to continue his revenge against Dimmesdale. This creates the descending action in this chapter, adding plot development to the novel and showing the importance of this chapter.
