A. Survey PlanThis survey will assess how Northern and Southern political views on the Fugitive Slave Law cause division between the two parts of the country? The purpose of this investigation is to analyze Northern and Southern criticism of the Fugitive Slave Law and how their political views created division between the United States, further leading to factors of civil war. To do this, critics will be examined by analyzing articles on fugitive slaves from the North and South and interpreting their views on the fugitive slave law. The investigation will also evaluate the Fugitive Slave Act and how that law reinforced disunity between the states by examining Confederate and Union criticism.B. Summary of Evidence According to the Rochester, the Fugitive Slave Act was a law that was created on February 12, 1793, to target runaway slaves and bring them to justice. (Rochester 16) The law states that if a runaway slave crosses west or south of the Ohio River, then he is considered a fugitive from justice. (Rochester 16) Following a runaway, the law also states that if a runaway slave is in someone's custody, he or she must return him or her to the state or territory from which he or she escaped. fled.
