Neonatal nursing is a field of nursing care specifically designed for newborns and infants up to 28 days old. The term neonatal comes from neo, “new” and natal, “relating to birth or origin”. Neonatal nurses are an essential part of the neonatal care team. They are trained professionals who work to ensure that the newborns in their care are able to survive any life-threatening event they encounter. They treat infants born with a variety of life-threatening problems, including cases of prematurity, birth defects, surgery-related problems, heart defects, severe burns, or acute infections. in hospitals has always been carried out by nursing staff, but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until the 1960s.
