Essay / Why Gun Laws Should Be Regulated - 1112
Why Guns Should Be RegulatedWith the United States leading in gun deaths per capita among industrialized countries, mass shootings like Columbine, Sandy Hook and Virginia Tech, and an average of 33 people dying every day in the United States from gun violence are all reasons why we not only should, but must, regulate gun laws. fire. Why should guns be regulated?Gun laws need to be regulated for multiple reasons. On the one hand, several sources, including the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have ranked the United States as having the highest rate of gun violence among industrialized countries and as being the leader in firearm deaths per capita among industrialized countries. According to the CDC, approximately one hundred thousand Americans are victims of gun violence and thirty thousand people die each year from firearm injuries. As if these 4 statistics weren't enough to justify gun regulation, we still have to worry about things like gun shows that use loopholes in our current laws to sell guns to the mentally ill or to former felons which are then used to contribute to the multiple school shootings we have seen over the years and other gun-related crimes. The Dangers of Lax Regulation There have been many incidents in American history alone that could have been avoided if existing gun regulation laws had been enforced and monitored. Such incidents reportedly include the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, the 1997 Columbine High School shooting and a 2011 shooting involving Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. All of these incidents were caused by a lack of funding from the federal government to expand background checks and a flaw in the current set of laws that allow the sale of firearms...... middle of paper......firearms when in reality it only allows military personnel to own weapons. This view of the Second Amendment was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1939, when the courts ruled that the Second Amendment only guaranteed the right to bear arms in the context of a state's ability to form a militia. continue to create new laws to regulate gun laws. As we noted previously, there are loopholes in our current set of laws that sometimes allow people to bypass the background check system entirely. We must first look for ways to improve our current laws to ensure that problems like this do not continue to occur. After this, as was discussed earlier and seen in other countries around the world, we must continue to pass gun laws because this will help reduce overall violent crime in the country..
