Western values are different because women fight for equality, defend themselves and are independent. Compared to life in India, the values are different because women are expected to be a pativrata, as explained earlier in the essay. Women are not independent because their lives revolve around men; either their father, their husband or their sons. In marriage, women are responsible for their husband's life. Wives must ensure that their husband has everything they need, such as food cooked, his clothes are clean, and children are taken care of before the wife gets what she needs. Since married women are responsible for their husbands' lives, it is frowned upon if their husband dies before his wife dies. This experience is considered as if the wife does not take enough care of her husband. Women who see their husbands die are called widows, and widows in the Western world and widows in India are viewed differently. In India, widows are poorly treated, disowned by their families, humiliated and mistreated. Widows often face abuse, verbal and physical, from in-laws and denial of their deceased husband's property and assets. As a Sati, these acts towards the widow are not permitted. A future Sati has the power to curse anyone who dares to stop the ritual from happening, after the Sati makes a vow to become a Sati. Widows in India are losing
