Essay / My grandmother's role in my decision to study biology
I struggled a lot with this idea. I was always interested in science and wanted a job where I could help others. Ultimately, I chose to major in Biology, Society and Environment (BSE) because of my grandmother. She was often sick when I was little. She had difficulty swallowing certain foods and sleeping. She watched his shows every afternoon and laughed loud enough for the whole house to hear because one of the Seinfield characters said something ridiculous or did something funny. I was finishing high school when she moved out of her home and into a nursing facility. Come to think of it, I often brought him a shoebox full of his medications after he finished watching his shows, waking up, or eating. I didn't know any better, but at that time I wanted to help people like her by knowing all about these strange little pills and heavy bottles. The excitement and confusion of reading the swear words on these bottles pushed me to discover more. And as I asked questions, I answered some of them. However, there were still questions that I could not answer and which forced me to delve deeper into the world of biology. And once immersed in the world of biology, there was no turning back. You need knowledge of biology, whether you are interested in the mechanisms that allow the human body to function, in finding a cure for a disease, or in questioning where we come from or what effect humans have on the planet. Watching my grandmother eat lunch, I learn superficially how her cells will eventually metabolize the banana to provide her with the energy she needs. I think about all the things on earth and their different abilities that help them survive, and I realize that there's really no difference between someone like Grandma and (Seinfeld character) Elaine. Okay, maybe just a few small differences. This understanding pushes me to learn and grow. I hope to continue my study of the relevance of the biological sciences and their relationship to social, environmental, or health-related issues at the University of Minnesota. This is the first thing that has been close to my heart in a long time, because I know that it is the only important thing for my future. Even today, I make it my personal goal to continue to immerse myself in the world of biology and answer unanswered questions. So, BSE was a perfect fit for me because I could gain valuable knowledge, gain a better understanding of science, and become the first in my family to practice in the healthcare field. I owe everything to my grandmother. I am happy that I decided to specialize in BSE. It's great to be able to study biological sciences as well as social sciences while having the freedom to customize my major as my interests evolve and change..
