Essay / The Glass Menagerie - 789
On April 12, 2014, Syracuse Stage presented the play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. The play was directed by Timothy Bond and proved to be an interesting production. The Glass Menagerie is a memory game set in St. Louis in 1937. Its action is drawn from the memories of the narrator, Tom Wingfield. Tom, who dreams of becoming a poet, works in a shoe warehouse to support his mother, Amanda, and his sister, Laura. Their father, Mr. Wingfield, ran away years ago. They hadn't heard from him, except on a postcard, they said he had fallen in love with long distance. Their mother Amanda, who sincerely wants the best for her children, puts pressure on them with her uncontrollable desires for them. She is disappointed that Laura, who is crippled and terribly shy, attracts no gentlemen. She is even more disappointed to see that her son is following in his father's footsteps. The director (Bond) chose the ideal people for the characters in the play. The director used blocking that was very effective and in line with the personality of the character. One example is when Laura, Tom's sister, is always on the sidelines, appearing antisocial and shy when interacting with the other characters. When Mr. O'Connor, Tom's work friend, came over for dinner, Laura was horribly shy and distant. She remained in her room at the start of dinner, and when called to the table, she was so upset that she fainted. Another example was the impasse between Tom and his mother Amanda. When they speak, Tom seems to resist what she says, turning his back on her and walking away. We can say that Amanda is a mother who is high because even if it is obvious T...... middle of paper ...... music to set the mood. When times were depressing, we heard dark and sad music. One example is when Tom accidentally broke one of Laura's glass figurines. Laura was surprised and disappointed, which made Tom feel horrible. Another example is when Laura and Mr. O'Connor were dancing, there was waltz music. Overall, this production was very interesting and well performed. It was somewhat enjoyable for the audience, there were moments of boredom but the comedy kept the play interesting. The director did a great job putting everything together and as a result, everything was perfect. The only thing to say that would improve the play is to make it more interesting for the audience so that they don't get tired of watching it.
