Essay / A comparison of Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne,...
It was they who, with their unique styles, managed to impress the people of their society and, more importantly, continued to influence writers of many years later. Although some of their works are considered a bit out of step with their times, and even controversial, it cannot be denied that they are notable works due to their subject matter and theme. From satire to fiction, Washington Irving established a reputation as the first American to transcend America and England. Hawthorne used the events of his life as inspiration and, even better, his view of society and humanity helped him write great novels. Finally, Edgard Allan Poe, a man with a troubled soul, managed to write spellbinding works full of mystery, crime and gothic themes. All three men were successful writers and their works will no doubt continue to be a source of inspiration for many others.
