Essay / The best argument against gay marriage: Glen Lavy's many reasons for why same-sex marriage should be legal. The main ones are that not allowing same-sex people to marry prevents them from receiving legal benefits such as hospital visits, health insurance, family leave, etc. They also argued that they are fighting for their rights the same way African Americans were fighting back then, and that same-sex marriage will not threaten our society. For centuries, religious and political leaders have protected the sanctity of marriage as the union of a person with a member of the opposite sex for the purpose of procreation in a consensual, contractual relationship recognized by law. Harvard Law School graduate Glen Lavy uses many logical arguments in his argument in the Los Angeles Times that allowing same-sex marriage can put our society on a "slippery slope." A situation in which people involved in incestuous and polygamous relationships will want to marry. As the lead attorney for a legal alliance of Christian lawyers, the Alliance Defense Fund, Lavy could have made his point along religious lines. He could have argued that the Bible prohibits homosexual relations, also called sodomy, and that people who participate in or support them will burn in eternal flames. Instead, he appealed to society's moral perspective. At the start of his argument, Lavy forcefully and logically asked, "With the California Supreme Court eradicating the opposite-sex requirement for marriage, what's to stop a future court from changing things like the binary nature of marriage or the prohibition of incest? marriage ... middle of paper ... strict partnership laws provide the same legal rights as marriage, but only at the state level. We might think that supporters of same-sex marriage should try to change the law on civil unions and domestic partnerships from one accepted at the state level to one accepted at the national or international level. Is granting these so-called rights worth the risk of leaving our descendants a world where sodomy, polygamy and incest are the norm? Can we even give them a loophole by changing the law on civil unions? These are the questions Lavy wants us to ask ourselves. As he makes clear, there is nothing stopping people in polygamous and incestuous relationships from using the legal model of same-sex marriage to advance their cause.
