Essay / Criminal Justice: The Objectives of Sentencing - 725
Sentencing is the imposition of a criminal sanction by a sentencing authority, such as a judge. Schmallger & Smykla, 2009, p. 71) Sentencing has seven purposes, including vengeance, retribution, just merit, deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation and restoration. Revenge refers to retaliation for some kind of aggression and injury. Revenge can be a form of punishment for the criminal justice system. The jury sometimes bases its choices on emotions, facts and evidence. In some cases, this is considered revenge because the victim views things that way when they feel justice has been served. Retribution is a type of condemnation involving another form of retaliation. Retribution means “reimbursing” the offender for what they have done. ( Schmalleger & Smykla, 2009, p. 73) The victim is not alone when it comes to being affected by the crime. Society is greatly affected by the actions of a criminal, no matter what field he chooses. Retribution, in the good sense of the word, would be if a colleague does her best in her job and her boss gives her a raise. This would be considered a reward for his good deeds. When it comes to the criminal's heinous acts, retaliation would most likely be community service in the city where the crimes were committed. This form of sentencing gives a kind of relief to society, making it feel a little safer. Additionally, righteous deserts are a form of condemnation. Just deserts are defined as a perspective on criminal sentencing according to which criminal offenders are morally wrong and therefore deserve to be punished. (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2009, p. 73) Basically, criminals commit these crimes and when they are arrested, they get what they deserve. There is a sense of balance between ...... middle of paper ...... the results of these goals, the crime rate has decreased significantly. Revenge allowed some victims to reassure themselves. I think revenge can be a good thing or a bad thing. A negative view of revenge is when an offender kills or rapes someone's child and that person tries to find ways to get them killed. They all have an effective means of obtaining justice. According to the Sentencing Project, the cost of prisons has increased and it is very expensive to find a place in prison for these offenders. Based on the overcrowded prison, they have to build new prisons, which will cost the government money.References1. Schmalleger, F. and Smykla, JO (2009) Corrections: in the 21st century.
