Definition of euphemism. Euphemisms are generally defined in terms of substituting words, phrases, or expressions that may be disturbing or suggest something unpleasant to the recipient, using acceptable, less offensive expressions instead. It is a polite and decent way people use to talk about rude and embarrassing topics such as: death, body parts and even expressing love in front of others. For example, the use of (deceased) in English and the use of [ɂintagala ɂila raħmatillahi taʕala] (He transferred to the mercy of Allah) in Arabic instead of the word [mata] "death". Many linguists have made some attempts to define the word euphemism from different angles. Allan and Burridge (1991, p. 11) propose a definition which goes along the following lines: “A euphemism is used as an alternative to a disfavored expression, in order to avoid a possible loss of face: either one's own face, or, by offending, that of the public or a third party. Cruse (2006, p. 57) defines euphemism as "an expression that refers to something that people are reluctant to mention for fear that it will offend, but which lessens the offensiveness by referring indirectly in some way or way." from another. "According to Crown (1976) (cited in NOman, F. 2013), "Similar meanings are found for euphemisms in Arabic with the Arabic root (luṭf) and its derivative (laṭa:fah) which are 'to be kind, friendly, thin, f...... middle of paper ......ves and friends of the deceased.2.5.
