Essay / Ancestor Report - 760
I'm going to write about one of my ancestors, Amanda Barnes Smith. He was a loyal and kind person. She was born February 22, 1809 in Becket, Massachusetts. His mother was Fanny Johnson and his father was Ezekiel Barnes. His grandfather came to the United States from Scotland and served in the Revolutionary War, under George Washington, as a general. Amanda had three brothers and five sisters. Amanda was still young when her family moved to Amherst, Ohio. She spent the rest of her childhood there. Amanda married Warren Smith at the age of seventeen. She and her husband were happy where they lived, but her older brother moved to New York to reside. His sister married David Smith, who was Warren's brother. Amanda became pregnant with her first son, William, and gave birth on May 9, 1827. She gave birth to her second son on September 26, 1828. Amanda joined the church of Campbellism. Although her husband and father did not accept the religion, they did not object to her attending this church. She was baptized in Campbellisim Church by Sidney Rigdon. By the time she joined this church, another church was founded. This church was called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This religion gave her the impression of having found the church in which she had desired to put her faith. She was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Simeon Carter on April 1, 1831. After her baptism, she had twins. Even with her declining health, she had children without problem. She was very happy with her family and later had other children. Her husband soon joined the church and they became a strong family. Very few people accepted the church into his family. His brothers-in-law baptized......in the middle of paper......a well. No service could be performed for fear that their lives would be in danger. They left for a member's house three kilometers away. There, Alma lay face down on the ground for five weeks. One day, when Amanda came back, she found Alma on the floor dancing and playing with the other children. It was an amazing miracle from the Lord. She later found another husband named Warren Smith, unrelated to the other Warren. They moved to Nauvoo and had three more children. She saw the Nauvoo Temple completed and received its endowments. Other mobs came to the village and chased them away. They left for the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on September 18, 1850. They escaped safely. She lived in Utah for a few months before she died. Growing old and then moving to Richmond, Cache County, to live with her daughter. She had six children. She died at age 77 in June 30, 1886.
