Augmented reality is changing the way we see the world. Augmented reality is by no means a new technology. However, it is growing in popularity as the hardware and software that allows us to see our world from new perspectives becomes less and less expensive. As technology advances, processors and circuits become smaller and smaller. Thus enabling more capabilities from various forms of hardware like phones, computers, glasses, contacts and even your car. All of these devices have screens, or windows, in which we view our world, and smarter programs, software, and hardware built into these modes in which we view the world. The way we see the world around us will forever change based on our own interests thanks to augmented reality. However, the question we need to ask ourselves is: Is the ability to superimpose whatever we like onto our world a good thing or a bad thing? The history of augmented reality dates back to the early 1900s, when L. Frank Baum wrote the novel The Passe-partout. Printed in 1901, the book mentions a set of electronic "character marker" glasses that, when you look at someone through them, will show a letter on that person's forehead regarding their character. However, the first invention using some type of augmented reality did not appear until 1968, with Ivan E. Sutherland and his three-dimensional head-mounted display. “The basic idea behind the three-dimensional display is to present the user with a perspective image that changes as they move.” This would allow an illusion of 3D on a 2D plane. However, this was not true augmented reality; yes, it augmented what you see on a screen and gave an illusion of 3 dimensions, but it doesn't overlay actual reality with com...... middle of paper ...... you in front things that you wouldn't normally see in reality, it makes this augmented reality, but a fully immersive augmented reality, or what Sulon Technologies calls, "extreme reality."
