The first principle deals with professional development and how it should help educators understand the difficult characteristics of ethnic groups and how variables such as social class, religion, region, generation, extent of expansion, and gender strongly influence ethnic and cultural behavior (Banks, et al., 2015). The authors state that if one wants to improve their students' learning prospects, they must be culturally relevant and know how to convey information to students where knowledge can be transmitted to where students can understand, master, and succeed (Banks, et al., 2015). As part of this principle, the team identified five areas that will help teachers better know the students they teach. Teachers have a duty to discover and identify their personal approaches regarding racial, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural groups. They should do as much research as necessary to better understand where their student audience is coming from, as well as the school's culture. The second principle states that all students have equal opportunities to learn and meet high standards set by the district or state. This would require teachers to be highly qualified to teach in their field, that the school provide a safe environment for students.
