    Othello gives this to his wife Desdemona. This symbolizes their relationship. When Othello is unwell, Desdemona goes to wipe her face and Othello drops it on the floor. He then states: “your towel is too small” (III.iii.289). When they leave, Emilia comes in and gets the handkerchief to keep. She continues to explain how her husband tried to get his hands on this item. When Emilia reports this to him, Iago immediately begins hatching a plan to ruin Othello's marriage. Iago is so manipulative that he makes Othello believe that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio without any real proof. Iago intentionally destroys the relationship between Othello and Desdemona without feeling any guilt. He goes to Cassio and gives him the object as proof to break up Othello and Desdemona. For Othello, the handkerchief was precious because it was the first gift he gave to Desdemona. When Iago lets it be known that she has cheated, Othello demands the handkerchief. She doesn't have the subject and tries to change the subject. Othello asks “Fetch me the handkerchief: my mind is troubled” (III.iv.84) then she says “Come, come: you will never meet a more smug man” (III.iv.86). Othello is overwhelmed and walks
