  • Essay / Sexual Assault - 688

There are many stories of young women being sexually assaulted on college campuses, and the women themselves are blamed for their own victimization. Listening to all these stories, it seems that colleges would rather side with the men at the school than try to help the girls at the same school. To gain traction in the sexual assault debate, colleges should incorporate well-lit campuses, the criminal justice system should work to reduce reports of sexual assault, and colleges should offer more support programs. In the article Sexual Assault and Rape Perpetration by College Men: The Role of the Big Five Personality Traits (Voller & Long, 2010, p. 457), the authors state that “sexual violence is a distressing problem in American society , especially on college campuses.” Voller and Long (2010) go on to state that researchers do not have a precise understanding of what might cause a person to commit sexual assault against another person. In addition to this information, Voller and Long also state that the five-factor model could provide a better understanding of what might cause a person to commit sexual assault (2010, p. 459). Additionally, Voller and Long state that the five factors that could be possible attributes of a person who commits sexual assault are “neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness” (2010, p. 459). In the article Forcible, Drug-Facilitated, and Incapacitated Rape and Sexual Assault Among Undergraduate Women (Lawyer, Resnick, Bakanic, Burkett, & Kilpatrick, 2010), it is stated that “20% of women will experience some form of unwanted sexual contact at during their lives” (Lawyer and Kilpatrick, 2010). et al., 2010, p.
