    INTRODUCTIONJericho, or "the oldest city in the world" as it has been called, is best known for the biblical account of the fall of the walls of Jericho. Although there are other stories of Jericho mentioned in the Bible, such as the curse that was placed on Jericho and the parable of the Good Samaritan, the most popular and debated biblical story of Jericho is the fall of the walls of Jericho. Did the great fortress surrounding Jericho really fall? The purpose of this article is to explore the history, geography, and theology of ancient Israel in order to determine that the ancient walls of Jericho actually fell. This article will proceed in three steps. First, an overview of the geographical location of Jericho, ancient and present, will be given. This will be followed by a review of archaeological discoveries and excavations, followed by an examination of biblical prophecy regarding Jericho, as well as an observation of Jericho throughout its history. Finally, a summary of the evidence put forward in favor of the fall of the walls of Jericho will be provided. The steps mentioned above will demonstrate how geography, theology, and history all support the fall of the walls of Jericho. Geography Today, Jericho lies about five miles west of the Jordan River, near the Jordan River. At 900 feet below sea level, Jericho is the lowest-lying city in the world. Although its location is obscure, Jericho is believed to have been a major military capital at one time. In fact, much of what is known about the city of Jericho concerns its defensive walls.
